Cutsinger in second place, with Detert reporting smallest figure

Sarasota County Commission Chair Alan Maio continues to outpace his board colleagues in terms of net worth, the latest Florida Commission on Ethics financial disclosure filings indicate.

However, Maio reported a smaller figure for 2020 than he did for 2019, his latest report showed.

As of June 17, Maio wrote that his net worth was $3,082,300. In June 2019, he noted that the figure was $3,252,097.

In second place, Commissioner Ron E. Cutsinger of Englewood reported that his net worth as of July 1 was $1,589,314 — slightly more than half of Maio’s total.

Commissioner Michael Moran narrowly edged out Commissioner Christian Ziegler for third place. Moran reported that his net worth as of April 30 was $927,150.25. That compared to $620,716.38 as of May 1, 2020.

On Dec. 31, 2020, Ziegler noted, his net worth was $876,233.25. That was more than three times the amount he listed as of Dec. 31, 2018: $206,324.83.

Ziegler won his District 2 seat during the November 2018 General Election.

Rounding out the board members, Commissioner Nancy Detert attested that her net worth as of Dec. 31, 2020 was $392,213. That was up slightly from her Dec. 31, 2019 total of $322,206.

  1. I have said before that these Commissioners (County and Planning) are destroying our barrier Islands and rural areas. Prior Commissioners knew how to govern and recognized the jewels of Sarasota. In the recent past, we had a local government that worked with all Parties to build, grow and maintain a sustainable balance from enforcing coastal setback lines, the barrier Island overlay codes, to rural (with hamlets) and habit areas. It should be no surprise to our Citizens that we all will encounter difficulty obtaining renewal of our insurance coverage for our properties in the future. Our leaders have forgotten how to be stewards for our County, its lands and its citizens. Approval of three hotels on a Barrier Island made of sand and planning east of I75 to change farmland into housing developments are other disasters in the making, as this is our drinking water. Please wake up. We have an election coming, and this group of Commissioners who approved the Planning Commissioners are not getting the message. Haven’t we gotten the message that we are just another economic asset? Climate change is real, and where will the water go when we build? And doesn’t who is leading our efforts and deciding how we will meet the future in Sarasota County means something. Vote it is your voice.

    1. I'm so thrilled that most of the commissioners are millionaires, which I expect doesn't include the various kowtowing and other perks lavished on them by developers. It's too bad, though, that they don't seem to realize that they are working primarily for the middle and lower income residents of our county, as we outnumber the rich be a vast margin. They have also been entrusted with the present and future wellbeing of Sarasota County, truly a jewel that requires intelligent management, care, and maintenance, which have not always been present. I sincerely hope they could do better if they manage to keep their positions of trust going forward.
